Conferences and Professional Activities

First, I will discuss the campus-based activities I have participated in, and below, I will talk about the national and international conferences where I presented papers, including an invited talk. Please refer to my CV for the topic of each presentation.

In April of 2024, I was part of the organizing committee of a Spanish Symposium that gathered members of Spanish departments from various colleges and universities (Dartmouth, Harvard, Columbia, Barnard, and Princeton). The purpose of the Symposium included to start making connections for future collaboration and also to address some issues that affect our field, such as Artificial Intelligence. About 45 people attended the event and we are planning to offer it biannually at different venues.

In June of 2024, I participated in The Language Flagship Technology Innovation Center Workshop. It was a 5-day event that welcomed 50 people from different universities who wanted to learn about the affordances of AI in the foreign language classroom.
In October of 2024, I attended the Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning Workshop. This workshop focused on the creation of OERs for different language programs at various universities. Although the Spanish program does not have its own OER nor it is an active project, it is a possibility for the near future.
Other campus-based activities include my service as a mentor for first-generation low-income students and as an advisor for Ezra Stiles College students, which keeps me connected to students one-on-one. I also participated in a campus-based activity called Connections and Collaboration Dinner Program offered by FAS. In this event, I met with faculty members of other language departments to discuss pedagogical issues that affect our field. In the 2022 meeting, for example, we discussed the feasibility of eliminating textbooks, which became a reality in 2024 in the Spanish department.
Finally, for the spring of 2025, other colleagues and I are planning an event that will showcase students' projects created for our language courses. The purpose of the showcase is to share this activity with other language departments and give credit to our students' work.
I have also kept an active role in presenting at approximately 18 national and international conferences on topics such as course redesign, the use of Virtual Exchange, neurolinguistics, and children's literature. I have also presented at the Yale Center for Language Studies a few times and at my own department for my colleagues.

As evidence of my standing in the field, I was invited to give a talk at Duquesne University in September of 2024 on the redesign of SPAN 145. This was an amazing opportunity to share what we are doing at Yale not only with Spanish faculty members but also with students of Spanish.

Finally, I am also a reviewer for different textbook publishers and journals, such as Hispania, Foreign Language Annals, and MIFLC Review. This activity allows me to explore topics related to my interests while also guiding other researchers in their academic or professional pursuits.
